Women in Business Fashion Show Luncheon happening this weekend
The Maricopa Women in Business (MWIB) third annual Fashion Show Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon, takes place at Province Towne Center this Saturday, August 23, 2008, at 12:00 pm. The luncheon is MWIB’s largest fundraising endeavor each year and is an event the community eagerly anticipates.
The highlight of the luncheon are the fashions modeled by local volunteers, many of whom are escorted by members of the Maricopa Fire Department. This year, the fashions will be provided by Dillard’s and will include garments for both men and women, from children to seniors, and every age in between. Some of the models return each year because it has been such a fun experience. The fashions give Maricopa residents a sneak peak at what’s hot for the coming season.

Business Profile: Tutor Time
Working parents in Maricopa have a new option for daycare and preschool for their kids. Tutor Time held an open house at their massive new facility on John Wayne Parkway on Saturday, August 9th, and the doors officially opened last Tuesday.
Tutor Time accepts children from 6 months to 12 years old for their “LifeSmart” curriculum. The principles of the Tutor Time LifeSmart curriculum follow the guidelines for developmentally appropriate practice set forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). “It covers all those academic areas that children need, and social as well!” says Connie Johnson, Director of Maricopa’s Tutor Time center.

Community invited to workshop for Hidden Valley Transportation Framework Study
Residents interested in learning more about the I-8 and I-10 Hidden Valley Framework Study are invited to attend a community workshop. After a brief presentation, technical staff will be available to answer questions one-on-one in an open house format.
The workshop will be held Thursday, August 28th at the Global Water Center, 22590 North Powers Parkway. Registration is at 6:00 pm, and the presentation begins at 6:15.

Time is running out to vote early in upcoming primary election
The Pinal County Recorder’s Office is offering one more opportunity in Maricopa for in-person early voting for September’s primary election. Maricopa residents will be able to cast their ballots from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at 44625 West Garvey Avenue on Thursday, August 21st, 2008.
Of the 14,000 early ballots requested, only 4,000 have been turned in. Filling out the ballot and dropping it in the mail is the easiest way to go, but voters can also bring their completed ballot to the early voting site.

Registration underway for the Founder’s Day Chili & Barbecue Challenge
The City of Maricopa is proud to partner with Wells Fargo to offer a free event specifically designed to give local chefs and cooking gurus an opportunity to showcase their talents in the Founder’s Day Chili Cook Off and the Second Annual Barbecue Challenge on October 11th, 2008.
Chili Cook Off contestants will battle it out for best overall chili, and a $1,000 cash prize. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for best meat chili, best vegetarian chili and spiciest chili. Local restaurants will also be able to enter their chili, with a specific category dedicated to their entries. All chili must be prepared onsite the day event, allowing attendees to watch the contestants’ culinary creativity.

Saturday storytime kids get an extra treat this week
Children who attended Secondhand Pages Bookstore’s weekly storytime this past Saturday got something extra.
It was a packed house for the 10:30 storytime which was read by “Miss Kerry” of Little Acorns Preschool. Then, at 11:00, there was a guest appearance by “Pepper”, an 18 year-old African Grey parrot.
Pepper and her owner Vince are Maricopa residents and can often be seen together around town. They wandered into Secondhand Pages one day and owner Jennifer Kacprowicz asked Vince if he would be interested in bringing her into the store. He agreed and the kids loved it!

Joint agency traffic enforcement detail ensures safety in school areas
With the start of a new school year the Maricopa Police Department’s Traffic Unit geared up to help educate motorists and enforce school zones throughout the city. A joint agency traffic enforcement detail was assembled to assist with this task. Traffic officers from the Casa Grande Police Department and the Gila River Indian Community joined forces with the Maricopa Police Department for the first day of school, August 11th, 2008.
Traffic units focused on speed in school zones, traffic around bus stops and other traffic violations near school campuses. During the one day detail officers made over 70 traffic stops and issued more then 50 traffic citations.

Overlooked hazards in the home claim the lives of children each year
This week’s Water Safety and Drowning Prevention article focuses on overlooked and unforeseen hazards around the house. Items such as buckets, toilets and bathtubs claim the lives of several children each year. This article highlights these hazards and provides tips to help you prevent emergencies from occurring in your house.
BUCKET SAFETY: Nationally, there are around 25 drowning deaths each year, with hundreds more hospitalized due to submersion events. Most of these emergencies occur in three to five gallon buckets that are less than half full, and many contain various chemicals commonly used to mop floors around the house.

Police arrest juvenile in connection with firecracker incident at High School
On Thursday August 14th, the Maricopa Police Department responded to Maricopa High School at 45012 West Honeycutt Avenue on a report of an explosion.
The initial investigation revealed that someone had ignited a very large firecracker and thrown it into the middle of a large crowd of students waiting for the bus, injuring over ten students. The injuries included a laceration to a student’s leg, minor flash burns and inner ear injuries to several other students as a result of the blast. Immediately following the incident, the Maricopa Police Department School Resource Officer, in cooperation with the school administration, began an investigation.

Crosswalk installed on Honeycutt Road after parents protest
Several local parents staged a protest Thursday, near the Butterfield Elementary School, over the lack of a marked school crossing on Honeycutt Road. Butterfield is located on the edge of The Villages at Rancho El Dorado, but also serves students in the Senita community on the south side of Honeycutt.
When the 2008-2009 school year started this past Monday, there were school zones in place on Butterfield Parkway to the north of the school and on Donithian Way to the east, but no crossings or restrictions on Honeycutt, a major east-west artery in the City of Maricopa. This angered some parents.
